star trek: discovery tilly weight gain

David Ajala: Ive never thought about that. It makes sense there would be and that they be a part of the medical team. Mary Wiseman told Forbes, It was tricky, but it was a really, really fun and satisfying challenge.. Can Picard go round the sun once more and rescue Saru from Discovery? Smart doesnt mean competent. If you cant understand that message, then you are very much part of the problem. Where I live people compete on the merits. I keep reading that no character like hers should not be in starfleet, yet she is. That promise was fulfilled in last weeks season finale, and Wiseman is talking about her return. I think criticism of the actors is wrong as well, its not about the actors its what they have been told deliver. My suspicion is they farm this out to sweatshops somewhere in Asia. Shes a geeky, nerdy character, so wonderfully over the top, like so many of us in the fandom. I cant spoil anything into season five, except to say that we love Tilly. Has Tilly body-shaming outside of the Twitter imbeciles been a thing? Yes, The Expanse. That was always the theory I had for Barclay. Youve got to hand it to Harry Kim. I love Tilly. Saying that its the job of actors to tell people whats healthy and whats not is the problem, not a solution. Its a tricky one, as someone who is outside America and didnt have English as the first language growing up its more noticeable. Agree. And I belong., After reading the Forbes article, Wiseman got some backup from someone who knows what its like to be a woman in the captains chair: Kate Mulgrew, who thinks Mary is killing it on Discovery and should pay the haters no mind., I saw the @Forbes article on Mary Wiseman @may_wise clearly killing it onscreen & off in #StarTrekDiscovery. https://t.co/zV56ClHoUZ, Kate Mulgrew (@TheKateMulgrew) December 18, 2020. Thats undeniable. However, Tilly's rise to Lieutenant in Thursday's episode of Star Trek: Discovery did not invoke feelings of joy. Yeah, self absorbed is an excellent way to describe her character, Id never thought of it that way. But I really do like Book a lot! I like me. She is best known for starring as Sylvia Tilly in the Paramount+ science fiction drama series Star Trek: Discovery (2017-present). I would not say it isnt a valid creative decision to try this approach, especially in an age where we are emphasizing the need for self-care, its just not to my taste. That is definitely not a true statement. So I think Tilly definitely goes to employ those skills. After they wrote her to be the most annoying person possible. I could watch Tilly all day! It just happened. She let go in S4 of her parents expectations and embraced a new purpose. This was to reveal the true intents and emotions of the players in each plot, which highlights the role they play in momentous choices in high-stake situations. Im mostly just curious if Tillys removal from Disco came from Wiseman looking to do other projects or if they wrote it in and broke the news that she was getting cut as a regular. Im sorry if the idea of someone not like Discovery upsets you, but its unreasonable to expect people to change their minds for that reason. The Enterprise D was the only place we saw a councelor. I think Saru holds out as being the most consistent, and Tilly is close, but not quite. I suspect that Prodigy may use some of the elements that Beyer expanded or created for Full Circle without actually developing any of the overall story arc. No one can be expected to sugarcoat reality for you, and your attitude to people who dont is very indicative that you need someone to help you with that. Its so brutal. Which I think would be a tremendous mistake. I guess some people would rather the perfect people of TNG than anyone that mirrors back anything they dont want to see in themselves. They told us and a handful of other outlets what to expect for their characters and more. If we dont have tolerance and respect, how are we able to learn and improve humanity!? That said, the stolid approach to characterization has its benefits as well when an emotional outburst happens it can be devastating (see: Picards breakdowns in the likes of Family, Chain of Command, First Contact), but it also allows for subtler moments to have outsized impacts (Odo asking Garak to breakfast, Seven revealing her favorite color, Picards 1/4 smiles when no one is looking, Spocks eyebrow etc), which is also quite true to life. That could explain the weight gain. A statistical average does not justify shaming or ridiculing anyone. How does Tillys scientific mind come into play in solving the crisis of the anomaly in season four? Even Picard has his own show. Harry wasnt annoying watching him was just sad :-D. Im glad for you that you didnt find him annoying. Where did all the good writers go?? Even though she's still in the final season of Starfleet Aacademy studies She was assigned to the USS Discovery to get some practical experience. Not sure what the formal CBS/Paramount process is for publishing that kind of stuff, but the story was so detailed that I genuinely wanted to begin looking into it. Tilly is the most human member of the crew. The Relaunch Litverse books for DS9 are uneven in my reading experience as compared to the TNG and the Voyager books once Beyer took over. Theres a little Harley Quinn. No it says a lot about the incredibly dangerous message she is sending. Just blows my mind. And the only family she has is on that ship. What tradition do you speak of? Book is Han Solo. Make better choices. Its really just certain comments sections and Facebook garbage holes. I can see myself having a few bottles of synthehol with him. The Delta Quadrant is a dangerous place, and the remnants of species and societies that survived around the edges of the Borg network and incursions were harsh and justifiably skeptical of the Federations. I think that in a world thats so repressed and violent, violence becomes these peoples only outlet for pleasure and release. You mentioned that the rest of world laughs at America because of obesity. Jack perhaps you were at the Dave Chappelle protest screaming Judas, you are starting to sound like the type who gets sensitive over everything. Im not counting on it. Obligatory mention of the stupid turbolifts and how dumb they are. You either think about what you can contribute to society or how society owes you handouts, respect for above-mentioned bad habits, fictitious pronouns even. She could of made it what we call General American/mid-Atlantic to neutralize it a little. Not sure what her weight has to do with anything. Star Trek: Discovery streams exclusively on CBS All Access in the United States and is distributed concurrently by CBS Studios . Many smoke to keep the weight off. Its not celebrating obesity to say that her body is her business and nobody elses. The doctor was usually the therapist. Maybe not but what are your thoughts? Bad, character pandering types of writing, with over-emotional children in the roles of astronaut-scientist-soldiers. Some folks here like this nu trek because it lowered standards to make them feel better about themselves. The Terra Firma arc introduced the real Mirror Universe version of Tilly (aka Captain Killy). Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. :). The actress also discussed how Killy inspires some fans: Killy is somebody whos very important to a lot of fans, especially my curvy women out there who like to see another full-figured, fat, curvy, chunky woman get to feel powerful and use that size to command authority, said Wiseman. She is relatable and human and wonderful. When Mary Wiseman's Lt. Sylvia Tilly left the USS Discovery for a job at the new Starfleet Academy in the fourth episode of season four, it was promised she would be back. Why do you think being nervous or anxious means that you can not graduate from the academy? As long as Wesley Crusher exists she will always be in a race for that title. Then maybe I would actually remember his name! Body shaming is wrong and immature. Seasons one through three are available to stream now on CBS All Access. Sense of morals. How blandly Puritan. And if people are critical of her because her appearance does not meet their expectations, they dont really have a clue of what Star Trek is all about. Its gotten very stale now. Youre saying she isnt believeable because she sounds like she has a 21st century *accent*? To even suggest that is stupidity writ large. Tillys great contribution is that shes NOT that sort of superwoman most people can never be. I even got a t-shirt that says DISCO on it, which prompts inquiries about my musical tastes of past decades when I was a twenty-something, lol. But to play the Devils Advocate here for a moment Tilly as she was originally presented and continued to be for quite some time is not something most women would aspire to be I should think. But how the women look?! Mary Wiseman: Right, when you use empathy for evil, its manipulation. The very basis of Star Trek is in direct conflict with people like that. If that scene reflects something she regularly incorporates into her real-life, then I think she will be just fine and she can tell the haters to go pound salt. SuKal accidentally blowing up all warp ships thats another instance of Trek being intwined with my own life So you offend S3 of DSC, you also sully the memory of my mum and EVERY mother that ever died. Jealous and insecure, they can only feel better by putting others down. So when very capable people feel un-capable, crazy things happen. Tilly is the product of lazy writing and a lazy showrunner. Everybody does NOT love Tilly. Then that very well could be something for not just women but everyone to aspire towards. We use cookies to ensure that we give you the best experience on our website. Ill never forget when I, a woman of 160# at 58, healthy, deemed fit by military and bodyfat percentage indexes, approached the Credit Union one day, when the guy at the ATM finished his transaction, turned, saw me, and yelled Hey, fatass!. Im a human being, you know? Acceptance? Age is affecting my memory haha. I wonder what the advertisers behind this site think of posts like this. Perhaps season four will address Burnham and Tillys unreadiness on more than an emotional level. Yes but Star Trek shouldnt be about lazy writing, poor character development and bad storytelling. And Books starshipthink of it as Star Treks answer to the Astro Megaship from Power Rangers in Space. At New York Comic Con, TrekMovie participated in some group interviews with members of the cast and crew,. She is super meta. But Tilly and the nervous mess Adira has devolved into? It is not yet known what role, if any, Wisemans Tilly would have in the upcoming season, with possibilities ranging from guest or recurring character to becoming a series regular again. I know everyone is different but for me, once I hit my mid-30s my metabolism slowed down, so I had to cut back on the amount of food I ate compared to when I was 25. I keep saying this but its a great time to be a Star Trek fan again! And how and how would your abilities be used in the Mirror Universe? Its sci-fi, brah. When Mary Wisemans Lt. Sylvia Tilly left the USS Discovery for a job at the new Starfleet Academy in the fourth episode of season four, it was promised she would be back. She wears 36D bra size and weighs 147 pounds. Nibiru? In the season four finale Coming Home, Mary Wiseman returned as Lt. Tilly, now a Starfleet Academy leader working with cadets and Admiral Vance to coordinate the evacuation and defense of Earth on Federation HQ. I dont think youre ready for that kind of interaction, online, or anywhere else. Ichebs torture on Picard was horrible and the eating ganglia in S1, yikes! Anyway, another Discovery-ism, amongst the many other weird decisions on this show. They should all try for the standards of randos on the internet like you Body shaming is just another category of bullying, with the same general goal of the shamer making him/herself feel superior by putting down others around them, rather than elevate him/herself with goodwill and compassion. It was EXACTLY what I needed while mourning my own mother. I think theres room for it. Great interview, Dawn. All you ever do on this board is show up and attack womxn for being womxn, LBGTQ+ for being LBGTQ+, people of color for being people of color. I think you are talking jibberish. I would prefer to finish the rest of Prodigy first season instead. I dont believe any of the other series had a therapist on the bridge. Im sorry but what youve described about Tilly is like something out of a Nickelodeon teen high school drama. Yes, I like both Barclay and Tilly. should take a pear of pruning shears and cut off that little pecker of yours (its what Killy would do). Trolls that bodyshame others are a lower life form. It was a novelty in his first story and they turned it on its head when he got zapped and made super-smart, but most of the time hes very trying, especially when he gets thrown onto Voyager. Im sure many may NOT be a Janeway but could at least look at her and say thats what I aspire to be. Because Book is someone who doesnt just have cerebral, intellectual intelligence. I dont understand this at all. Hahahaha! The U.S.S. After Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Tilly (Mary Wiseman) journey to a planet alongside Burnham's mother Gabrielle (Sonja Sohn), things get a little hairy when the Qowat Milat nun they're . Waste of talent. What accent? So I was also just very excited for the fans. Fan favourite is a bit of a stretch..quite possibly the most irritating character in Trek history I know Gene Rodenberry never wanted Starfleet to be portrayed as a military outfit, but this has gone so far in the opposite direction that its being run like a pre-school participation awards ceremony. Having Tilly be one was justdumb. I lovvvve Lilly/Tilly and her curves. And doesnt that just make the point about the difference between fitness and apparent chunkiness or curveyness. Im sorry I can sugarcoat it. It always cracks me up when people say that they hate Tilly. Shes supposed to set the example. When a show blankets the airwaves with hugs and confessionals and cheering it tends to make any subtler moments stand out far less, but this is also not a subtle show to begin with. I see those things and they hurt me because Im a person. This time, even if I wanted that, my body said: no were going to take some time here, we need to heal. And so, I find myself in this bigger, fuller body and it made me appreciate where I was before. The Klingon redesign was much more than a visual reboot and especially the tech aspects dont fit canon (holographic communication, Klingon cloaking, android bridge crew, easy terraforming, state-of-the-art nanotech, Enterprise battle squad). Shes not going anywhere. In her interview with TrekMovie last week, Discovery co-showrunner Michelle Paradise echoed these sentiments: Well never be done with Tilly. We have no information that Beyer consults in this show. Somehow these insecure people feel others not like them are a threat to how they see themselves and how the world should, in their opinion, be. The journey to discovering Tilly, the rescue puppy that would change our lives, began before she was even born. She is most recognized for her roles in the science fiction drama series Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+, where she first played Cadet, then Ensign, and finally . Good for her, and I love the character! As you put it: I love how Disco has put the human back into the human experience. And I agree wholeheartedly. Theyre losers, pure and simple. But Barclay is just irritating as hell. So. No character like her would ever have graduated Starfleet. Learning? I hope were able to explore it because theres potential for great levity, but then also really important conversations to be had because when you care about someone you dont want to see them go through pain, and I can see completely how Tilly will be very protective of Michael Burnham. Tillys journey has helped me over the last few years. Hey writers room go back to TNG and see how a child became an honourary bridge officer on the Enterprise D. (something equally puzzling to say the least) Picard did it because the Traveller who could traverse space time and see the future and past told Picard it was extremely important to encourage the boy. I think the character would have been much better served if Tillys quirks were something that changed as the character grew over the seasons. Ive learned a lot of bad spelling comes from dictating into your smartphone. Her character Tilly is not my favorite on the show but body shaming is a shameful act by itself. Speaking to Glamour UK, Sonequa Martin-Green revealed that she has dealt with body image issues too: Back in the mid-to-late eighties, early nineties, everything I saw, with hip hop, was all curvy, curvy, big butt, she recalls. His Voyager appearances were also horrid. Between Marys comments about how Tilly internalizes her experiences as acting First Officer and Captain and the fact that we see Gen Rhys in the big chair in one of the early production stills, does anyone think that Discovery might get Treks first regular series Asian First Officer? I keep hearing the word heartthats the poorest excuse yet. Against all odds, shes in Starfleet and thriving. Personally I would put Barclay and Trois Mom in that group too, but not sure recurring characters belong with regulars in this race. Miss Wiseman F those fake Trekkies/Treksters keep acting your ass off. Harry wasnt annoying. Thanks for the heads up about Beyer and the Voyager books. Its all pretty subjective. For people who dont know, it had to do with Voyager leading a fleet of ships going back to the Delta Quadrant a few years after Voyager arrived home. Not with DSC, not with ANYTHING. I find her character interesting, but inconsistent. There really are some of the DS9 authors that are stronger and some that tend to tell too much and show to little in their writing in my view. Obviously I dont know what M. Wiseman is like. And it was mentioned in one of the episodes of the first season, I dont remember whichwould have to research, that councilors on Galaxy class ships due to the fact that families were on the ship and it was meant for longer than 5 year missions. And second of all, just to dig into it, you dont always get to see a woman like me in that sort of position. | November 13, 2021 | If they wont act a woman should take a pear of pruning shears and cut off that little pecker of yours (its what Killy would do). Saru would then recognize the potential in her, give her opportunities to build her self esteem and confidence, and wed get a good arc that doesnt seem forced like it does now. She cant control her weight. I think Saru will just be the surrogate first officer again although he is now a captain. Also the writers, Erika Lipoldt and Bo Yeon Kim. While not getting specific about if or where we will see Tilly again, Wiseman also hinted the finale was not the end of her story: Tilly is not somebody who lets people leave her life. lol ;). I agree! I'm finding Star Trek Discovery to be incredibly dull and childish. I am a therapist in real life, and even *I* think it was crazy that they had a therapist on the bridge. I like seeing her in the series and like knowing that girls who are considered chunky by their teen or tween peers will know they can become something special and respectable, even if they dont have the ideal Hollywood body type. I just wonder if maybe they are adapting the basic idea to what we are seeing in Prodigy since the Protostar couldve been part of the Full Circle program and was sent back to the DQ for a specific mission? They should have tried to make Tilly more credible first. ;). It took me 3 seasons just to remember all their names. I want to really like Discovery, I do. New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery premiere on Thursdays on CBS All Access in the U.S. and on CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada, where it's also available to stream on Crave. The ships shrink should not be a Command level position and in fact would make sense to be on the CMOs staff. I know most dont share my opinon that after a terrible first half of S1, I have generally liked Discovery but making Tilly first officer was quite possibly the most ridiculous plot twist in the history of Trek. Although criticism of a performance is valid (Burnhams whispering, over emoting etc.) So sayeth Scotty, the contrarian. You know, like a psychotic murderer? Although they didnt really use secondary characters wellthey still dont. Of all the issues I have with Star Trek Discovery, Mary Wiseman/Tilly is definitely not among them. I read somewhere that Gates McFadden and Marina Sirtis had somewhere in their contract a stipulation that they had to fit into their costumes. Mary Wiseman claims that she wants to inspire all the curvy women around the world with her Star Trek weight gain story. Come on she looks great. Any accent would be acceptable for a time that hasnt happened yet. So many reasons to be critical of Disco plot holes, awful sense of morals, missed opportunities, etc. Makes sense. I will have to go check it out. Ok, SH didnt invent this. Troi made explicit the evil intent lies we tell each other and ourselves to gain selfish material and political advantage. Mary Wiseman has established herself as a talented actor on Star Trek: Discovery. Those b@stards, however, totally killed Landry )Cuddles with @actordougjones and @davbentom These men are nothing short of hereoic in prosthetics all day e'reday. Actress Mary Wiseman did a series of media . And Tilly is the Trekkie. Unfortunately PICARD turned out to be set in the same period, so it derailed my plans, although later I did figure out a way to explain the considerable differences in the Prime Universe. Events in David Macks two books towards the end of that series ( A Time to Kill and A Time to Heal) have a profound impact throughout the rest of the Litverse. Its not SMGs fault of course, its just the way she has be written throughout the series. Because she symbolizes the Trekkies, geeks, nerds. But because of Discovery we have Lower Decks, Picard, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, Short Treks, possibly Section 31 and the Academy show. If that happens, I'm betting she'll be a part of it. Personally I dont find that inspiring in any way whatsoever. And so she will be part of this universe and this world for many years to come. I never felt that what has come before should define the franchise in the future. I think people need that kind of thing to heal. Thats not a leader. That is assuming the this Starfleet Academy show is set in the 32nd century. So her appearances ended up not being 100% awful. I expect that well have her in the world and all of those things. From what Ive read, having her on the bridge because of her betazed abilities was what Roddenberry had in mind. Lets stick with the science and not target individuals. And it all happened OFF SCREEN! Like a lot of people, she pivoted and found herself in a new role as teacher. Where is this? She is perhaps, the most human character on the show. Theyve written Tilly as just the straight oh theres Tilly for the jokes. [1] Early life [ edit] Wiseman is the youngest daughter of Dorothy and Kevin Wiseman and has three older brothers. My best advice is to give some of the Litverse books a try and decide for yourself which writers appeal to you. I saw someone just last month asking on a Facebook fanpage if Starfleet had some kind of physical fitness standard and if so, shes violating it, ect.the same old idiotic abusive misogyny disguised as genuine concern. Jake is about 45-50 and one of the two lead characters. And with Troi being a betazoid, thats why she was on the bridge. We never saw her effort to become that person. The other big issue Ive always had is the graphic nature of violence, this We are TV-MA streaming, so we can do anything attitude I simply hate that. Thanks for the correction and yes that is correct. Barclay was another unrealistic character that never shouldve made it in to Starfleet. Season four of Star Trek: Discovery arrives on Thursday, November 18 on Paramount+. . I dont read the same type of criticism for their male actors. I absolutely love Tilly/Killy. What? Id add Kirk to that at several times over the years. Tilly is part Wesley Crusher and part Barclay. Her character, Sylvia Tilly, has had plenty of opportunities to shine without giving anything away, and Wiseman has risen to the occasion. I agree, the writing, character development, and story telling needs to improve. Im not the idiot fringe but her weight is none of our business (and, also, she had a baby before S3, I believe). Editor's note, 23 Dec 2020: If you like Wiseman's interview here, then you should also check out interviewer Dawn Ennis's other work. If you cant deal with the idea of conflicting opinions then I really dont think you should be online at the moment. Ive seen people here and on other message boards body-shame Ms.Wiseman, and its disgusting. Its shall we say very variable. So, although he does the occasional guest star role in other shows produced in Canada, he could take on a larger role on Discovery. As soon as she was, they should have rewritten Tilly from being a cadet to being a lieutenant or something. And its funny that you bring up needing constant therapy as a bad thing when a ton of real life people see a therapist on a regular basis. Sonequa Martin-Green as Burnham hugging Mary Wiseman as Tilly in Coming Home. I always have to correct it, so its not terribly efficient. Wiseman had other things to do. Mary Wiseman. Its all relative, but I dont see a lot of actors being body-shamed. If I was a public figure I would do zero social media, ignore the internet, cash my massive paychecks, sign autographs for real in-person fans I meet, and be so thankful Im not working in a grunt job making minimum wage.
