lilstock ichthyosaur

Other comparisons suggest the Lilstock ichthyosaur was at least 20-25 m. Of course, such estimates are not entirely realistic because of differences between species. They have been identified as the limb bones of several dinosaurs, including stegosaurs and sauropods, as well as indeterminate dinosaurs and other reptiles.
'Other comparisons suggest the Lilstock ichthyosaur was at least 20 to 25 metres. Mr de la Salle, co-author of a new study on the find published in the journal, PLOS ONE, said: “Initially the bone just looked like a piece of rock but, after recognising a groove and bone structure, I thought it might be part of a jaw from an ichthyosaur. A fossil collector found the bone on the beach at Lilstock, Somerset in May 2016 It is a surangular taken from the lower jaw of a giant ichthyosaur marine reptile These, it would appear, were also jaw fragments of the giant, previously unknown species of ichthyosaur, which could have been as long as 30 metres (98 feet). A series of bones found at Aust Cliffs in Gloucstershire in 1850 were initially identified as the limbs of stegosaurs and sauropods from the Late Triassic age but the new study refutes these previous conclusions and suggest they may have come from an even larger creature. The largest complete ichthyosaurus fossil ever discovered, at 3.5 metres (11ft), was found to have a foetus still inside its womb.
Paleontologist Darren Naish from the University of Southampton, who has studied the Aust bones and come to the same conclusion, tells Pickrell that these new finds are astonishing and agrees that they suggest that these ichthyosaurs neared or even exceeded modern baleen whales in size.

'As the specimen is represented only by a large piece of jaw, it is difficult to provide a size estimate,' added Mr Lomax, honorary visiting scientist at Manchester. “We compared it with these Aust bones, and as soon as I saw it in person, my jaw just hit the floor,” Lomax tells Pickrell.
His work has appeared in Discover, Popular Science, Outside, Men’s Journal, and other magazines. “Nonetheless, simple scaling is commonly used to estimate size, especially when comparative material is scarce.” They also solve a 150-year-old mystery relating to supposed 'dinosaur bones' uncovered in Gloucestershire in the 19th century. This study, led by Dean Lomax at Manchester University and Professor Judy Massare, of SUNY College at Brockport, New York, identified the specimen as an incomplete bone, called a surangular, from the lower jaw of a giant ichthyosaur. Scientists have been able to calculate the size of the newly described ichthyosaur by comparing the recently discovered jaw bone with other marine reptiles of the period. As Pickrell reports, the find has led the team to reassess other fossils found along the English coast. Mr Lomax added: 'One of the Aust bones might also be an ichthyosaur surangular.
Bones found nearby in Gloucestershire in the 1850s may well have come from a similar but even bigger marine reptile. 17th Annual Photo Contest Finalists Announced. 'The suggestion is that they belong to something even bigger, they could have got to around 30-odd metres long', Dr Lomax told MailOnline.
It also goes against a recent assertion that the Aust bones represent an early evolutionary experiment of dinosaur-like gigantism in other reptiles.
They evolved from an as-yet unidentified land reptile that moved back into the water. The huge animals, which remained at the top of the food chain for millions of years, developed a streamlined, fish-like form built for speed. This new specimen is about 25 percent larger than the previous largest ichythyosaur, a 69-foot-long creature including half a skull, backbone ribs and part of the tail called Shonisaurus sikanniensis found in British Columbia, reports Laura Geggel at LiveScience.
