These consist of mosaics whose style well demonstrates the contacts between the Sassanians and Byzantium. Among these sites is the capital built by the founder of the dynasty, Ardashir Papakan, as well as a city and architectural structures of his successor, Shapur I. As for the architectural language, the chahar-taq form illustrates best the linkages of Zoroastrianism and Sassanid rule: the Sassanid Archaeological Landscape of Fars Region encompasses Zoroastrian monumental architecture from its very beginning with the Takht-e Neshin, its consolidation at Bishapur, here in particular with the fire temple formerly interpreted as Shapur’s Palace and its development during the Early Islamic time with the Sarvestan Monument. One of these is “free to view” by following the minor road up the valley from the Bishapur side - soon, on the right, you will see a fenced off area in front of the cliffs with a pair of reliefs showing the investiture of Shapur I and his victory over various Romans in a single “non historical” scene. Participation of traditional master workers familiar with the usage of traditional methods and construction materials has contributed to the preservation of authenticity. Although it is titled a “Palace”, its actual function isn’t understood. However, lithology of this pattern strongly distanced from the monuments of Parthians and tends to follow the common patterns of the Achaemenids. Bishapur is a treasure trove of valuable Sasanian artifacts such as Anahita Temple. The statue was overturned which was replaced by the army in year 1958. I am not sure I would go out of my way to visit Bishapur but, if you are passing near by between the Shushtar area and Shiraz (it is around 10kms south of the direct road) I would certainly recommend stopping off to see at least the bas-reliefs – even though you may well be seeing others.

However, some of the restorations done on the structures at these sites, namely where wall facings have been applied to avoid crumbling of the core masonry, also include a large percentage of new materials, including plaster and black cement, with new stones used for the facing of the walls.
